Hello Deep community!

With Deep Physio having an acupuncturist and physiotherapists that perform acupuncture, we get many questions regarding the difference between acupuncture and dry needling. Hopefully this blog will help in understanding the two treatment modalities and how we work together as a team at Deep Physio!

Acupuncture stimulates the balance and flow of Qi energy that in Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered essential to health. When the body is healthy, Qi (pronounced chee), flows smoothly through the meridians that make up a conceptual network of pathways throughout the entire body. When the balance or flow of Qi is deficient or obstructed it may be diseased or susceptible to illness. Acupuncture treat...

Good Morning Deep Community!

Today’s post is focusing on our clinicians and updating an older blog post. We get alot of questions about Kinesiologist and how they work alongside the other healthcare professionals at the clinic. Physiotherapists and Kinesiologist? What is the difference? Most clients want to understand the difference between the two professions, and why at Deep we recommend a client to work with the kinesiologist.

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. Kinesiologists graduate with a 4 year Bachelor of Kinesiology Degree which focuses on biomechanics and orthopedics; strength and conditioning; sport psychology; methods of rehabilitation, such as physical and occupational therapy; and sport and exercis...

Acupuncture and Pregnancy

Alexandra Ratzke

Registered Acupuncturist and Certified Laser Acupuncturist

Pregnancy and childbirth is an exciting and life-changing experience.  Your body creates a new human being in around 40 weeks! The process requires hormones to shift, increased production of blood, and organs physically move out of the way to provide a more suitable environment for your quickly growing fetus. The tumultuous transformation you go through as a mother can be full of twists and turns, and even before the baby arrives your body will face many challenges.

No matter what unfamiliar state your body is faced with each new day of your pregnancy, acupuncture can strengthen both your emotional and physical well being. It is an ancient Ch...

Do you work in a profession that involves sitting for hours on end? Do you ever wonder if your spine is affected by prolonged sitting? Do you have back pain that occurred gradually and you’re unsure of the cause? Do you get back pain, headaches, migraines, jaw tension, or neck stiffness?

If you’ve ever wondered what the consequences of sitting too long are – check out this blog https://www.deepphysio.com/single-post/2017/10/13/The-Negative-Impacts-of-Sitting, from our Physiotherapist Julie Alexander. There are many negative consequences of sitting, and some experts are even going as far to call sitting the new smoking!

Here are six tips to deal with back pain associated with sitting too much:

1. Get assessed by a physiotherapist. A physi...

You've just been through the miracle of life - although beautiful, it most certainly can take a physical and psychological toll. A lot has happened in the last nine months, hormonal and body composition changes are just the tip of the iceberg.

In preparation for delivery, the hormone relaxin is released during pregnancy to help relax the pelvic joints and ligaments as well as soften and widen the cervix. The pelvic joints and ligaments will loosen and expand so baby can pass through the birth canal. Your core muscles have to stretch over the growing baby. They can become weaker, and less effective at supporting and moving your body. Once stretched, those muscles might not be able to return to their original length and shape after birth. Your gro...

Concussions are a difficult injury, it is known as the “invisible injury”.  There are no clear-cut tests to determine with 100% certainty that a concussion has occurred, and there is not always visible evidence of an injury.  You do not use crutches, you do not get a cast, and you do not get a sling – often people will suffer silently without others knowing you have an injury.  The symptoms are variable, and range in severity. Unlike in other injuries people cannot obviously see you are recovering from a concussion, and may not understand why it took you a bit longer to pay for grocery bill, or why you got upset or emotional at an inappropriate time.

For a concussion to occur a direct blow to the head does not need to occur.  Whi...

Good Bye 2018 ... Hello 2019. Hello,

You and I have unique dreams and desires in our lives which motivate what we pursue and focus on. As a massage therapist I have had the privilege to observe people pursue healing from injuries, less pain, more mobility, and greater strength. I get to witness the results of their hard work and commitment to better health! In order to achieve those goals, steps are taken such as receiving treatment, as well as having and maintaining a self care program.

So friend I want to know…What is the GOAL that you are going to take actionable steps toward? Is it lessoning stress in your life, having decreased pain, walking 2 blocks pain free, or running in your first 5 km?   What your goal and focus is will help guide the whole treatment process....

Shockwave Therapy, what is it and why did we decide to add it to our modalities at Deep Physio? I first heard of Shockwave therapy when I worked in the UK but never had the chance to use it. It was a modality I heard worked very well in chronic conditions and started to look into it after I was noticing some of my clinical results.  If you have ever been a client at Deep Physio, you would know that we look at function, and the body as a whole when assessing the injury. We believe in finding the driver of the problem using our assessment skills, and then treating the movement dysfunction with specific protocols and hands on therapy.  We use the K laser for acute healing and pain, which has demonstrated amazing results.  In more chronic conditions...
